Chapter 1. Overview of IP Routing

This chapter focuses on the general design and operation of routing protocols for the Internet Protocol (IP). The ensuing discussions span IP routing principles and packet-switching mechanisms available on IP routers. Obviously, this chapter has a broader charter than the intended focus of this book. IS-IS-focused coverage starts in Chapter 2, “Introduction to the IS-IS Routing Protocol.” This chapter covers the following major topics:

  • IP routing and forwarding

  • Essentials of IP addressing

  • Classification of IP routing protocols

  • Unicast versus multicast routing
