From the days of piano rolls and sheet music to satellites and digital transmission today, the mission of PROs (performing rights organizations)—including ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC in the U.S. (equivalent organizations exist around the world)—is to ensure that songwriters receive fair compensation for public performances of their works. For example, whenever music is played on the radio or performed on television, these societies calculate, collect, and distribute negotiated performance fees to the writers and the publishers they represent. In a history built on verses and choruses, PROs are a monetary bridge that connects the most beloved and distinguished songwriters and composers to the world.
