Step 2: See the Goal in Your Mind's Eye
One of the keys to successful goal setting is your ability to visualize a successful outcome. In other words, you must be able to see the first step before you take it. I know this premise may sound unique, but it is a powerful concept that works. To be successful, you must first be able to see yourself as successful. You'll remember this concept from Chapter 2, in which we discuss the power of affirmations.
When we say our affirmations mentally, we activate our sensory perception, which allows us to visualize the outcome desired. What outcome do you see when you close your eyes and think about your goals?
Visualization is a great practice to get into the habit of doing consistently. When you visualize the outcome, you are developing the habit of beginning with the end in mind. Years ago, when I set a monumental goal to own and operate my own retreat center, I used this practice to describe exactly what I saw in my mind's eye. I sketched out every detail.
When I created this goal, I didn't have a location for the retreat center. I didn't have the capital resources to purchase such a facility. I didn't have a marketing plan to attract clients to the facility. I didn't have the curriculum developed for the program I wanted to instruct. I didn't have the team members in place to staff the program or the center itself.
