This chapter has covered the first stage of the IT-enabled business change life cycle, business and IT alignment. This stage is often the least well managed since it requires a strategic and evolving understanding of the organisation’s goals in relation to the external environment. It involves the engagement of multiple stakeholders, who often have different and conflicting viewpoints.

The nature of this challenge is different from the later more structured approaches associated with the development of the business solution.
