Contents of a business case

The business case consolidates much of the information gathered to-date on the problem or gap, options, solution and cost-benefit. Contents of an IT-enabled change business case are likely to include some or all of the following elements.

(i) Drivers for change:

  • organisational background including strategic perspective;

  • problems and opportunities with the current processes and systems.

(ii) Proposed business solution:

  • evaluation of options and recommended solution;

  • components of the solution.

(iii) Implementation approach:

  • project management approach, governance and timescales;

  • success criteria and risk management.

(vi) Cost-benefit analysis:

  • total cost of ownership – business and IT;

  • return on investment ...
