Differences between functions and processes

Organisations typically have a hierarchical structure based on business functions. Examples of these are: marketing, finance, operations, human resources and IT. One reason for this grouping is that it brings together people with similar skills who perform related activities with managerial guidance. It provides a clear promotion path for those in the function who can be evaluated by more senior people who have pursued a similar route.
