The definition of information and data

One of the challenges of dealing with the topic of information is that it means different things to people depending on their organisational and personal perspective. There are also multiple definitions associated with data and information. Sometimes data is viewed as the raw facts, with one example being numbers presented in isolation. What does the number 56 convey without the context of a category such as age or temperature? Even then more detail may be required such as the temperature scale. Hence information is often viewed as data with meaning. However, it is also the case that many people use the terms ‘data’ and ‘information’ interchangeably.
