Finally, we should acknowledge the impact that the nancial state of
the company has on consulting, not to mention the quality of a compa-
ny’s leadership. Companies losing lots of money will expect all of their
consultants to present only killer business cases for company-changing
or company-saving projects. Companies ush with cash will expect
their consultants to think boldly about how to make even more money.
Unfortunately, there’s no substitute for solid leadership. Bad leaders will
underexploit good consultants. Good leaders will work closely with good
