Deciding how to divide liquid assets like bank accounts and stocks is not quite as complicated as dividing houses, retirement funds, and businesses. But it can still have some twists and turns of its own.

Dividing Bank Accounts

Remember, we are dividing marital property only. If you have a bank account in your individual name that is from before the marriage or an inheritance or gift, then it stays your separate property after divorce. But if the bank account was opened during the marriage, and is not inherited or gifted funds, then it is marital property whether it is in joint names or individual names.
