Metadata

Metadata is data about data. It provides information about how data is organized. In the case of JDBC, metadata includes information such as column names, number of columns, and so forth. Because you might not always know what type of information is returned by result sets, the JDBC standard includes features that let us look at the structure of the returned ResultSets. This is called ResultSetMetadata, or data about the organization of ResultSets.
