The Need for a Clipboard
One of the most useful tools that modern operating systems have added is the clipboard. While editing a document in a word processor, users can easily cut, copy, and paste pieces of the document within the document or to and from other documents.
The clipboard is a temporary transfer area in the computer that can be used to hold information and then move it or replicate it elsewhere.
Clipboards can contain text, pictures, sound, formatted text, specific data formats and more. Applications can define their own clipboard type if the desired data type isn't explicitly supported. However, all programs cannot interpret all data formats. The data to be placed on the clipboard is selected most of the time by the user.
