Creating a HTML markup directly in portlets is okay for simple applications such as our "Hello World" example. However, for useful, real-world applications, we need a more comprehensive solution. The portlet specification allows the delegation of content creation and rendering to servlets and JSPs. JSPs are the template-based implementation standards for J2EE application development. They provide the flexibility and features required for developing the rich views that today's web sites need. A portal can leverage the strengths of JSPs, such as separation of markup from logic, powerful tag libraries, and so on, and create a robust and scalable solution.
