Database URLs
The following is the general syntax for a JDBC database
URL:
jdbc:subprotocol:subname
jdbc
Communications protocol, always jdbc.
subprotocol
Driver name.
subname
Driver-specific reference to a database. The subname ele-
ment in this syntax can get quite complex, and its for-
mat depends on the driver you are using.
The following sections describe popular drivers, detailing
each driver’s archive, the driver class that needs to be loaded,
and the database URL syntax for the driver. With the excep-
tion of the Sun JDBC-ODBC driver, I list only the Type 4
URL syntax for two reasons: one, because only Type 4 driv-
ers are portable, and that’s in keeping with the spirit of Java
itself, and two, to conserve space. I may also note the JDBC
API level. At the time this was written, it was usually JDBC
2.0. See “The JDBC API” for an explanation of Java and
JDBC API versions. Query the driver’s source URL or the
Sun JDBC driver database for information on other types of
drivers.
The following sections are very terse and consist only of lists,
formatted as follows:
Database Name
Description
Driver Name
The list items have the following meanings:
Get it online at: The source URL where you can find the
driver online
Archive: The archive file or files for the driver
Driver: The driver’s class name that you must load to
use the driver
