Using Job Assignments for Ongoing Development

NOW THAT YOU HAVE EXAMINED YOUR CURRENT JOB and its inherent learning potential, it is time (1) to think about the future and decide in what ways you need to continue to learn and grow to become a more effective manager and (2) to find job assignments that can contribute to that developmental process. There are two ways to approach the issue of your future.

One way is to look back through the ten developmental job components shown in Table 1 on page 3. What job components have you not experienced? Have you handled them all equally well? Are there gaps in your job experiences? What job components do you need to seek out in order to broaden your experiences and find new challenges?
