There are a wide range of environmental factors that are associated with job satisfaction. In many studies they are discussed as potential antecedents—things in the workplace that might drive satisfaction or lead to dissatisfaction. One thing to keep in mind is that most of the research about factors that might contribute to job satisfaction is based on survey methods that do not clearly indicate direction of effects. In most cases such studies show that environmental factors are related to job satisfaction, but it is not clear that they are driving satisfaction.
