The road to validation

You'll want to always validate your XHTML first. This is just as well, since W3C's CSS validator won't even look at your CSS if your XHTML isn't valid.

XHTML validation

Go to http://validator.w3.org/, and if your file is on a server, you can just enter in the URL address to it. If you're working locally—as I am from MAMP—from your browser, you'll need to use Save Page As and save an HTML file of your template's Joomla 1.5 output and upload that full HTML file output to the validator using the provided upload field. The following screenshot shows the initial result of my XHTML validation:
