Joomla! uses modules to display content and functionality on areas of the page other than the main content area. Though it is possible to embed modules inside the content area of the page, modules most often appear in sidebars, at the top or bottom of a layout, and on the edges of the main content area of the page. Modules are critical for designing compelling sites with good functionality. They can be used to display content, ease navigation, highlight information, and handle advertising duties.

The system includes both front-end modules and back-end modules. The modules for the front end of the system are called Site modules. The modules for the back end are called Administrator modules. In this chapter, I cover the Site Module Manager and all of the Site modules available in Joomla! 3. In the next chapter, I concentrate on the Administrator modules.
