The significance of JavaScript has changed greatly in the last few years. When I started working with Web technologies in 1998, JavaScript was at a high point. Web sites were finally able to have moving parts. But the high did not last long because of the lack of security features in browsers. JavaScript suddenly had the reputation of being an unsafe technology. In Germany, the Federal Bureau for Data Protection even advised that people should avoid using JavaScript on public Web sites. System administrators were urged to turn off this feature in the browser configuration.
