WHEN WE BEGAN our research on high performance in 2003, we knew we were in it for the long haul. Defining the very term high performance, for one, was a challenge. Figuring out a methodology that could consistently and repeatedly identify high performers (and average performers and low ones, too) was another. And then determining what got high performers into that position and kept them there was still another.

In brief, over the years we undertook five broad sets of analysis, and Accenture continues this work today in an ongoing program of research.
