Graph principles

Unsurprisingly, graph theory underpins a lot of the work that we do in networking, so it can be helpful to have a basic understanding of the terminology especially where the same terms are not universally used. Let's make some terms clear and unambiguous so we know what we're talking about going forward.

Node, or vertex (plural: vertices)

A single element within the network.

Link or edge

A connection between nodes.

Directed link

A uni-directional connection between nodes.

Graph

The collection of nodes and links within the network.

Directed graph

A graph where the links (or edges) are single-directional only.
