How it works...

First, we imported all of the packages needed to produce the graphic. Notice we are using sub-packages in a few instances. This is normal practice for Python coding.

The libraries used in this example are very particular to the operating system you are running and the version of Python you have installed. Visit the documentation online for matplotlib to understand the steps required for your environment.

We then created a (base) map using the state polygon image files downloaded from the internet. These are openly available for use. There are polygon sets for all countries and continents available.
