You know now about editing, compiling, and linking. Before you can begin to learn about programming, you have to understand a little about how the computer works in general and some differences between platforms in particular.

All computers follow the same pattern. They have much the same capabilities, regardless of make or model, and the only aspect changing is how well they perform. All computers have the following parts:

  • Processor: Follows instructions and processes data

  • Memory: Temporary working storage

  • Hard drive: Permanent storage

  • Display: Visual feedback to the users

  • Keyboard (and mouse): Input from user
