The ANSI standard for C and C++ offers some extensions to the basic language that allow you to access the underlying operating system (for input and output and time functions), handle strings, and perform calculations. You used some of the standard input and output functions in Chapter 5.
The aim of this chapter is to give you a good overview of the functions provided in the C standard libraries that come with all compliant C development environments.
The intention is that you’ll glance through the functions available and absorb the general philosophy. You might find this chapter better utilized as a reference during future programming projects and when reading through the remainder of the book.
