Compilers

Different platforms have different compilers, ranging from command-line to fully GUI IDEs. Some IDE providers wrap up existing command-line compilers (like gcc) into their IDE to provide a reasonably seamless complete development environment.

The weakest link in the tool chain tends to be with the debugging facilities. Debuggers can be quite difficult to set up and use without an easy GUI interface, and for that reason, paying for an environment can be worth it. Everything works as expected, right out of the book, and comes with a paper reference manual.

However, because Microsoft made Express Editions of their excellent development tools available to Windows users for free, that platform, at least, now has a definitive easy option. ...
