Built at the top of a slope, the chateau at Maisons dominates the view from the south-east, from Paris. Its location is now suburban, but when it was built the chateau was in the countryside – near Paris, but definitely outside the city. It is no longer on the edge of a forest, and its park has gone, but it presides over an impressive formal garden, laid out on the same axis as the house. The ‘Laffitte’ was added when the chateau was bought by a banker of that name in 1818, having changed hands several times over the previous century.
