When Mies van der Rohe arrived in the USA in 1937, he was already a famous architect. He had designed the German national pavilion for the international exposition in Barcelona in 1929, and had been the third and final director of the Bauhaus, before its state funding was withdrawn. In 1927 he had organized a celebrated exhibition of design for workers’ housing at the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart and three years later he had designed the fabulously glamorous Tugendhat House in Brno, now in the Czech Republic.
