The temples at Khajuraho were built when the place was a capital city – the royal seat of the Chandela kings of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The Chandelas founded the city in the ninth century but had moved away by the fourteenth, and Khajuraho is now much depleted: a town with 10,000 inhabitants and India’s finest collection of 1000-year-old monuments.
