Film-making developed in southern California because the region had regular bright sunlight and the early film-stock needed powerful light for it to work well. Now digital cameras make much less exacting demands on the cinematographer. In the 1970s television cameras still needed bright lights, and the Crystal Cathedral was built with television in mind. It was set up for the ministry of Robert H. Schuller, a televangelist, who had been broadcasting since 1970; before that Schuller had set up and run a drive-in church, commissioned in 1961 from Richard Neutra (1892–1970). ...
