To provide an accurate business-wide picture of performance it follows that all areas of a business should be measured in some form or other. The finance department is usually the department that is most used to measurements, but increasingly sales, marketing, customer services and operations are measured to help a business know where it is against its objectives.

Human Resources (HR) is not exempt from inspection. Often HR is only really challenged when there is an economic downturn or the business is seeking to squeeze costs. But HR measurement is important all the time, especially around two of their main functions – recruiting and training.

The KPIs detailed in this chapter allow you to measure HR performance so you can establish just how effective your recruitment is, whether you are consistently hiring the right people and whether your training is delivering a measurable return or not.
