Make Smart Bets

My dad loved poker. In fact, he loved it so much that after my mom passed away, he sold his house and moved to Las Vegas, determined to prove he could make a living playing cards. He was convinced he could beat the house. Once, after he had been playing for a while, I figured out with him how much he made in winnings over the prior year. It came to about three cents an hour.

But he beat them! He beat the “house vig” (or “vigorish,” gambling lingo for the house edge). That’s what mattered to him. It was the thrill of competition that attracted him to the game. He loved winning, in games and in life.
