The notion that computers can enhance knowledge processes is not new. Even before modern computers were invented, scientists such as Alan Turing described how they might exhibit human thinking qualities. In the 1970s and 1980s, experts predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) systems would be prevalent throughout business, even taking over from humans most routine decision-making activities. The concept behind one type of AI system, the expert system, is deceptively simple. First, elicit knowledge from a human expert, codify it, and store it in a computer knowledge base.
