The final target of a lab on chip is the individuation, quantification, and characterization of one or more target species. After sample insertion and processing, this is attained through the measurement of physical quantities that can be related to the amount of target molecules or to the target property to be studied. This operation is called detection. Available techniques for detection in the lab on chip can be divided essentially into two categories: electronic and optical detection.
