Appendix 5: Elements of Bio-Electrochemistry

Electrochemistry is a wide branch of chemistry dealing with chemical processes in which molecules lose or acquire electrons. These processes can happen during chemical reactions when the molecules come in contact or in electrochemical cells, where electron exchange takes place near electrodes [1,2].

A few among the most used methods in analytical chemistry are electrochemical methods and they are widely used in lab on chip design for detection, quantification, and characterization of target molecules.

In this appendix, we recall a few concepts of electrochemistry that will be used in Chapter 10 to describe and analyze electrochemical methods used in lab on chip.
