Overview

In this chapter, you will learn the basics of transforming a signal from the time domain into the frequency domain.

Goals

  • Learn about the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).

  • Determine the frequency spacing between the samples of the FFT (that is, the relationship between the sampling frequency fs, number of samples N, and the frequency spacing Δf).

  • Familiarize yourself with the power spectrum and how it differs from both the DFT and the FFT.

  • Understand how to interpret the information in the frequency domain for the DFT/FFT and the power spectrum, for both even and odd N.
