6.1 Introduction
In principle, the concept of laser-induced damage refers to the occurrence of permanent
changes in the optical materials. In practice, this change results in the degradation of the
optical performance of the system. erefore, it is highly imperative to measure the power-
and energy-handling capabilities of the optical components comprising the optical/laser
system in order to ensure the lifetime and reliable operation of such systems.
