4 Analytical Solutions

This chapter presents primarily the calculus-based approach to laser models that yield analytical results. Included are the Rigrod approach and the development of a formula for the determination of optimal OC transmission. In this chapter, the methodology of development of these approaches is more important than the results themselves since these may be applied to any specific laser configuration desired. For this reason, the Rigrod approach is demonstrated with two specific configurations. These formulae will be modified later when losses such as re-absorption loss are considered in Chapter 5.
