5 Thermal Issues
The purpose of this chapter is to outline the various ways in which temperature affects lasers, and to model those effects. Four-level lasers are generally unaffected by temperature change, but four-level lasers with a LLL particularly close to ground level are affected. It is ironic, then, that these quasi-three-level lasers, which offer the highest efficiencies, are also those most affected. This chapter examines these materials in detail, and models are presented to determine the effect of temperature change on laser output.
