Chapter 2 describes the rise of the Free Agent World. It showed us that getting work done is not just a matter of managing your own employees. When we say “lead the work” (not just employees) we mean leaders should first clearly identify the work to be done and only then decide if it is best done by employees, or by other means such as outsourcing, alliances, free agents, or platforms. It can be difficult to envision these other means, if you are accustomed to thinking only about work done by employees.
