Preface

What does it mean to lead? Are there natural born leaders? Can leadership be taught? These questions have consumed this writer for years since his first formal leadership role at 23 years old.

Since words are often the place to start when defining a concept such as leading, the following are some definitions from the Oxford American Dictionary of the words lead and leader:

lead: “Cause to go with by guiding or showing the way; direct the actions or opinions of others; guide others by persuasion, example, or argument; provide access to; bring to certain destination; pass or go through; have first place in a race/competition; be in charge; direct by example.”
