Auditors’ perspectives on quality in higher education

This chapter provides an introduction to External Quality Assurance (EQA), including a brief history of the development of EQA models used in higher education around the world. The concepts of ‘fitness for purpose’ versus ‘fitness of purpose’ are discussed, as is the notion of ‘standards’ as the current hot topic in quality worldwide. Standards as they are defined and interpreted in the academic quality discourse are considered and some practical examples of how standards are being implemented by national EQA agencies are discussed.
