Early in my childhood I became a steward of the rules. Mind you, it was not that I obeyed them regularly (just ask my father, who sat eye to eye with me at many a dinner because I refused to eat the meal that had been served). But becoming a steward of the rules has allowed me to remain creative yet productive, innovative yet accepted, out on a limb yet relevant. By intimately understanding the rules of the game, anyone can find his or her space to excel. And isn't that what life should be about—living by other people's rules in a way that enables you to remain free and others to remain satisfied?
