Leadership and Organization

Abstract

Leadership is not a coherent body of theory, it is instead a morass of theoretical perspectives and approaches. This chapter and the following will attempt to explain the main body of the most significant leadership approaches within a common metatheoretical frame. The socioanalytic model and interpersonal theory again play major roles in organizing the approach as in the personality metatheory in Chapter 2, Introduction to Personality Theory. Before we can examine specific theories, the concept “leadership” needs to be defined in a way that does not tie it to specific theoretical commitments a priori.
