Modern Approaches to Leadership
Abstract
Modern theories of leadership focus more closely on psychological and relational aspects. This chapter provides an overview of some of the more substantial or interesting modern models. I will provide substantial focus on the two most significant domains of research over the last couple of decades, transformational leadership and leader–member exchange theory. In addition, I will describe charismatic leadership, empowering leadership, and paternalistic leadership. Finally, I will draw out some themes in the modern theories and try to outline a quasidevelopmental model that integrates major aspects of all the leadership theories.
