A retrospective activity is not an informal gathering. It should be well run and very structured. That's why many teams choose to have a dedicated facilitator. The point behind a retrospective is to look at how the team performed and how the team can improve.

Successful retrospectives depend on many of the setup details. This is true more than with any other agile activity. There are a lot of details that really matter. It matters who attends. Equally important is who's not attending. Who facilitates your retrospective is important. Where you have your retrospective is also extremely important.
