At the start of his 40-year career, Coach had several rules, but ended up with a few “suggestions.”

Why?

As a high school coach, he threw two players off the team because they had attended a school dance and violated curfew (and lied about it). Coach also dismissed a player for smoking when it was not allowed. Later, Wooden realized these actions were too harsh for both the team and the young men involved, as those individuals subsequently lost their way.

Coach learned from these experiences. He ultimately recognized that a few substantive suggestions for behavior were far more effective than a litany of regimented rules.
