Phase II: Contracting

When the coach guides the client to identify and agree upon a developmental goal which is of high interest to the client, this is called Contracting. This phase – Steps #2, #3, and #4 together – will answer key questions that establish what the coaching will be about:

  • ■ What’s the need/want?

  • ■ How is that connected to the client’s development?

  • ■ What’s the benefit of doing so?

  • ■ Do we agree on the developmental goal?

  • ■ How can the coach be most useful in this conversation?

As these questions are discussed and resolved, a psychological agreement – or contract – is being established between the coach and client. ...
