Ford—Getting Ahead of the Public
Restating the words from Martin Luther King Jr. provides a valuable lesson in issues management for this chapter: “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.” A leader cannot get too far out in front of his stakeholders. They need to be brought along and prepared for the actions taken. Gerald R. Ford did the right thing for the nation in pardoning Richard Nixon, but he failed as an issue manager to mold consensus before making his decision.
