Contrary to the impression conveyed by most of the literature on lean manufacturing, it does notmake inspection, test and reworkgo away. These operations remain formany reasonsincluding explicitdemands from customersand therefore command attentionfrom line designers. They differfromproduction operations in that theirdura- tions vary frompiece topiece, theygenerate aflow of rejects to dispose of, theygenerate information about process conditions that must be exploited, and their effective execution requires afault-finding mindset.
