Even earlier than the beginning of my journey in 1985, as I mentioned in the preface, this book has its roots in teachings from post–World War II Japan. Following extensive research over the past 5 years, I have discovered that my grandfather, Charles W. Protzman, Sr., along with Homer Sarasohn and Frank Polkinghorn, (known as “the three wise men” in Kenneth and Will Hopper’s book The Puritan Gift), was responsible for teaching what we now believe, became known as PDCA in Japan starting back in 1949 (pre-Deming) during their Civil Communications Section (CCS) Industrial Management Course.
