Whatever its size or sector, whatever its location or its unique selling proposition, an organization is about people. And the good news is that people bring potential, a wealth of knowledge, experience and creativity. Enabling and empowering people to fulfill their potential is a key Lean Six Sigma principle. When it comes to understanding how processes work and identifying how they could be improved, who better to involve than the people who operate the process? People potential is so important that failing to unlock it and realize it has been identified as one of the eight “deadly wastes” found in organizations (which we cover in Chapter 10).
U.S. Army General George Patton clearly saw the potential in people when he said, “Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do, and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.”
